Many skin concerns that are cosmetic in nature may have a medical basis. Only a dermatologist can help you navigate treatment options from both a medical and cosmetic perspective.

The average dermatologist spends at least 8 YEARS AFTER COLLEGE learning the fundamentals of skin function and disease.
Don't fall victim to social media and Youtube videos advertising "get clear skin quick" schemes.

Have you noticed any new, changing or abnormal appearing moles on the body?
Most moles, brown spots, and growths on the skin are harmless – but this is not always true. The ABCDEs and the Ugly Duckling sign can help you detect melanoma.
-
-

A is for Asymmetry.
Most melanomas are asymmetrical. If you draw a line through the middle of the lesion, and the two halves don’t match, get it checked.
-
-
B is for Border.
Melanoma borders tend to be uneven and may have scalloped or notched edges, while common moles tend to have smoother, more even borders.
-
-

C is for Color.
Multiple colors are a warning sign. A melanoma may have different shades of brown or black and sometimes even red, white or blue!
-
-

D is for Diameter or Dark.
While it’s ideal to detect a melanoma when it’s small, it’s a warning sign if a lesion is the size of a pencil eraser or larger. It’s important to look for any lesion, no matter what size, that is darker than others. Rare, amelanotic melanomas are colorless.
-
-

E is for Evolving.
Any change in size, shape, color of a lesion, or any new symptom such as bleeding, itching or crusting, may be a warning sign of melanoma.
-
-

If you notice these warning signs, or anything NEW, CHANGING or UNUSUAL on your skin see a board certified dermatologist immediately!

We hear many messages about harmful UVA and UVB rays from the sun, but the light that comes off of your technological devices known as high-energy visible light (HEV) may also be detrimental to your skin.👩🏽‍💻
-
- 🤳🏾HEV light generates similar amounts of reactive oxygen species as UVA and UVB rays combined. HEV light exposure can lead to inflammation, impaired healing, compromised pigment production, sensitivity, dryness, wrinkles, uneven tone and texture, and sagging skin.
-
- 🤳🏾To add further insult positioning your face for selfies in the light may lead to your phone picking up light and reflecting the UV rays off your face, essentially magnifying the damaging effects of the sun.
Furthermore, infrared energy (IR) emitted by devices has been shown to cause flares of some skin disorders.
-
- 🙅🏼‍♂️So how do you protect yourself from your device?
-
- • Apply an antioxidant daily (substance that can prevent or slow damage to cells caused by free radicals)
•Look for ingredients such as melanin, topical lutein, and Liposhield® HEV Melanin in skin care products.
•Consider blue light filters for all digital devices.
•Do not work on devices while in bed.
-
- 👩🏾‍⚕️HEV light is not completely bad; it has beneficial effects on regulating circadian rhythms, boosting alertness, improving cognitive function, and elevating moods. The key is to find a healthy balance and protect the skin from unnecessary exposure.

🗣People of all colors, including those with brown and black skin, get skin cancer—Even if you never sunburn.
-
- 👩🏾‍⚕️When skin cancer develops in people of color, it’s often in a late stage when diagnosed. This can be deadly when the person has melanoma, a type of skin cancer that can spread quickly. Treatment for any type of skin cancer can be difficult in the later stages. -
-

Found early, most skin cancers, including melanoma, can be cured.
-
- 👉🏾Here’s how to reduce your risk of skin cancer:
-
- •Ask the person who cuts your hair to tell you if you have a growth or odd-looking spot on your scalp.
•Perform monthly skin self-exams
•See a dermatologist every 1-2 years
•Seek shade whenever possible. The sun causes many skin cancers.
•Wear clothing that protects your skin from the sun. A wide-brimmed hat can shade your face and neck.
•Wear sunscreen. Yes, people of color should wear sunscreen of SPF 30 or greater and when outdoors, reapply after 2 hours.
•Avoid tanning beds and sun lamps.
-
-
🙎🏽‍♀️🙎🏾‍♀️🙎🏿‍♀️People of color have a lower risk than whites of getting skin cancer, but they still have a risk. Monthly skin self-exams can help you find skin cancer early when a cure is likely.
